Vacancies varies each year in Central and State Governments. There is no quota system subject or degree wise in UPSC or MPSC. If Defence is your target area why do not you appear for CDS conducted by UPSC to become Commissioned Officer in Indian Army.

for that you have to study it on field and theory also.take advise of expert of geology.search on net.for a jobs opportinity.field work is more imp n geology after its degree.its more boring subject with most difficult theories but more than that its more Intresting and enjoible Subject ever.i did Bsc with it.now looking for the Msc adm
