As a programmer, you will be expected to be proficient in at least one language like Java or C+. However, you can always switch to other language that excites you intellectually keeping in mind that PHP, Python and Ruby are also very much exciting and useful in some situations of software development. The skills required as:
1. Problem solving.
2. Good command of data structures and algorithmic techniques (not necessarily know sophisticated stuff, but know how to use basic structures and techniques to most efficiently solve a huge array of problems).
3. Thorough coding abilities - translate your approach to code quickly. Debug

If you go through various university sites you will find that September intake is the most popular. January intake is limited. Not many universities have a January intake. Fall or September intake is mostly encouraged as it has the maximum number of scholarship opportunities, internship opportunities and so on. You will find none or limited in January intake. The wise option is to opt a September intake.
