if you have backlog then you can not say you have become an engineer. This aspect will always be referred to whenever you attempt for PG. So don't worry about this and go ahead.

You must aim for more than 75% in the final year. But, you have to pass the exam for lateral entry. I would advise you to go for it.

With Diploma, you can get lateral admission in 2nd year of engineering. Government of Maharashtra conduct test for all prospective students.
