I had almost the same comparison when I was looking at branches and colleges and the honest placement reality is very straightforward. Mechanical from Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology has a strong core reputation but core mechanical placements are limited and many students either go for higher studies, non core roles or prepare for other exams. CSE from Lovely Professional University has a much larger placement pool because tech companies hire in big numbers and there are more roles in coding, data, testing and related fields. If someone is very passionate about mechanical core and ready for GATE or higher studies then Th

LPU is a decent option for Mechanical Engineering, especially among private universities. The programme covers core subjects like design, manufacturing, thermal engineering, and materials, supported by labs and workshops. Infrastructure and practical exposure through projects and competitions help build technical understanding. Placements are available, though core mechanical roles are limited and many students also enter allied or IT sectors. Overall, it can be a good choice if you focus on skills, internships, and practical experience.

Placements for Mechanical Engineering at LPU are considered strong and consistent, with placement rates around 95–96% in recent years, an average package ranging between ₹5.75–7 LPA, and top packages going up to ₹20 LPA for B.Tech Mechanical students, while major recruiters include Bosch, L&T, Tata Group, Maruti Suzuki, Hero MotoCorp, Honda, JSW, Mahindra, and other core engineering and manufacturing firms; LPU also supports students through industry-aligned curriculum, advanced labs, internships, live projects, and focused placement training, which together enhance employability in both core mechanical and allied sectors.

If we don't consider personal interest and look only at scope within LPU, then Mechanical Engineering clearly has more scope than Automobile Engineering.

At LPU, there is no standalone Automobile Engineering degree at the UG level. Automobile-related subjects are covered within Mechanical Engineering through electives, labs, projects, and student activities. So in practice, automobile engineering is more of a subset of mechanical engineering here.

Since you've already completed a Diploma in Mechanical Engineering, B.Tech Mechanical at LPU gives you:

  • Broader placement eligibility (core + non-core roles)

  • Access to manufacturing, production,

Yes, In fact, many aerospace companies in India and abroad prefer hiring Mechanical Engineers. Because their skills are broader and more versatile. Aerospace is essentially a specialised branch of Mechanical Engineering. To transition, you can pursue a Master's (M.Tech/MS) in Aerospace or simply gain proficiency in tools like ANSYS, CATIA, and CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) to secure core roles in design and testing.
