The university was founded in 1929 by the entrepreneur Annamalai Chettiyar in the aftermath of the Montagu-Chelmsford Reforms. It was the first private university in India. It was taken over by the Tamil Nadu government in 2013. The university also provides more than 500 courses through distance education.

It depends on the state which you belong to. To get a MBBS government college From All India quota you have to score more than 615/720 in NEET. The cutoff tends to increase every year. And from state it can go down to 520 in state like Goa Maharashtra and 620 in Bihar and Uttar pardesh.
