Political Science

I would like to suggest you to opt for political science over history. Although history is also not a bad option but the way career in political science is increasing, it made me say this. If you have studied political science as a subject in your graduation or post graduation level, you have plenty of options available besides being a politician. In the government sector, a wide range of government occupations, from urban planning to legislature to intelligence bodies, are available for those with a major in political science. It is a common belief that political science graduates are all just made for politics and govt. agencies, but that's not true. In India, with this degree, you can make your career in journalism (You can prepare political reports, articles, blogs and interviews for print and online publications, as well as television and radio broadcasts), or can do research (you can write UGC-NET exam. After clearing it, you will be eligible to work as lecturer and pursue Ph.D side by side). Hence, by opting for political science, you can have almost any type of job provided that you must have to be dedicated to your studies and choose your college wisely. Hope this helps.

Political science is a field which deals mostly with practical and empirical aspects (except few topics in political science like classical political theory).
Whereas philosophy is more abstract, normative and prescriptive in orientation.
Philosophy seeks to find answers behind why factor, like why particular phenomenon whether social, political or economic is happening and its roots and origins and endeavors to bring it closer to ideal situation.
Whereas Political Science is the field where one is supposed to engage into disinterested research refraining from any personal prejudices and preferences to explain ongoing political phenomenon.
In terms of wideness and expanse, Philosophy is much broader stream than political science. Philosophy has broad contours touching all fields of humanities right from history, sociology, and economics to culture.

There are very big areas of specialization in political science to which you can opt for potential growth of your future. According to me, you will be very much beneficial if you choose 'International Relations & Middle East Politics' as your major and 'History & Business Administration' as your minor. Because with this combination, you will be able to fetch a designated job in the global market with high pay package. With this combination, you may get the job in-International diplomacy, foreign service officer, Liaison officer, conflict analyst, trouble shooter, peace maker OR local government/civil service: administrator, policy researcher and project or program coordinator. Remember one thing that all the opportunities not just demand your academic qualifications but your internal IQ as well along with your relationship building skills. Hence, try to gain everything in this subject.

If you are pursuing political science then you must be a UPSC aspirant. Political science course in itself is so vast that if you focus on it, you will not require any parallel course. But if you are aiming for UPSC then I would refer you some books that you should read that would increase your insight and at the same time prepare you for UPSC examinations. The first one is Indian Polity by M. Laxmikanth and the second is India's Struggle for Independence by Bipin Chandra. The book Indian Polity is considered the bible for UPSC exams as there are approx 25 questions you will get in that exam from Indian Polity for sure. On the other hand, India's struggle for independence is also an important book which enlightens you about the facts and all the hard work India went through to attain independence. If you are a first-year student, I would recommend you to start taking general studies coaching from your second year.
If you do these things, you won't need any other parallel course while doing political science.
