Yes, staff selection commission conducts the SSC CGL exam every year, to recruit the various post under various ministries, departments, and organizations. SSC release the SSC CGL online application form in May. If you want to apply for this exam, then you must wait next year. SSC CGL Exam is conducted into four tiers and there are no interview process. If you are cleared all the tiers then you will get a post under SSC CGL 2017.

In tier 1 exam, SSC provide 60 minute to solve 100 questions. Tier 2 includes 4 papers. Paper 1 - Quantitative Ability

Tier 3 Exam is a pen paper mode exam. In this exam you can choose Hindi/ English language to write an essay, letter etc. As per your medium. And tier 4 exam is conducted for Asst. Section Officer in CSS post and Tax Assistant post. If you want to go in Inspector post then you must clear the physical test.

You can take some cues from my preparation strategy for SSC CGL. I was able to secure 165 in English Tier-2 in SSC CGL 2016 exam. I was in a habit of reading The Hindu newspaper. I think, it is one of the biggest contributor to my success. I used to read it for 1- 1.5 hours right from Front page, Editorial, Business, and Sports, National, International and some other news. So, indirectly, over a period of times, my English interpretation skills improved a lot. Reading improves Reading Comprehension, Vocabulary, Sentence formation and I found occasional Idioms and phrases. Additionally it helped me in General Awareness. This is how Newspaper works: If you read it daily, you come across many words. These words repeats in many news. So, naturally your vocabulary gets a strong boost. You come across many phrases and Idioms and if you read them with a context, you will never forget them. Editorials help you in Grammar, sentence formation etc. So, Newspaper is a complete package if it is taken seriously for 34 months before the exam. Give at least 60 - 90 minutes daily without fail. I love reading books. Though I am a novel freak since college days but the habit took a backseat in 2014 due to job and other commitments. Then during preparation, I started with a book, The Startup Nation (Excellent book on entrepreneurial spirit of Israel) followed by other books. I used to read books in night 12 hours. Non-Fiction stuff is best. I bought a book, General English by S. P Bakshi and followed it chapter by chapter. My way around was as follows : I read a chapter, note down some important points, grammar rules in a notebook and practice some questions at the end of the chapter. Did it for every chapter so at the end of it, I had almost all the grammar and other English rules. Used to revise them daily for half an hour. So, I remembered most of them during real exam and helped me a lot in Choose the best alternativetype of questions. Start with Tenses. Tenses are the foundation of English. Revise tenses daily, takes only 67 minutes for all the rules and see your confidence boost. Made a notebook for vocabulary. From A-Z, I completed in some 15 days. Revised almost daily and got a good grasp. Words from newspapers and previous year papers formed an important part. With words, write their most important synonym and antonym.

B.Tech students can give SSC CGL Exam.
Students who have completed B.Tech course or are in the final year of engineering can appear for the SSC CGL exam. The official web portal of SSC clearly mentions the eligibility factors for CGL aspirants. Candidates who are aiming to appear for the CGL exam should take care of the following requirements or criteria.
1) SSC CGL minimum Qualification:
The basic requirement for SSC CGL exam is a Bachelor's Degree or Graduation Certificate from a recognized university. There are however certain other criteria for some particular posts such as Assistant Audit Officer/Assistant Accounts Officer or Junior Statistical Officer.
2) Age Criteria for SSC CGL:
There are different age limits for different posts and the related information can be accessed from SSCs web portal. For 2017 exam, age limit was calculated from 1st August, 2017. If the candidate doesn't fulfill the age criteria for the particular post, he or she will not be permitted to give the exam. The minimum age limit for maximum posts is 18 years. It should be noted that SSC provides age relaxations for some categories, like SC/ST candidates have 5 years of age relaxation and OBC candidates have 3 years and so on. For example: Central government Employees who have served for not less than 3 years can get 5 years of age relaxation. There are also some physical standards for some particular posts which may include candidate's height, chest and medical reports, etc.

I have cleared this exam without any coaching. I had even studied only from the standard books available in the market. But Before I start, it would be pertinent to tell you my qualification and my level of knowledge before preparation. So that you could appreciate this answer better. Qualification: BE (Computers). Level of Knowledge:
1. MATHS: Non-Maths background student generally stereotype Engineers that all are good at Maths. No doubt we have an edge over Arts, commerce student. We can learn it faster than them. However, the matter of fact is we all have been out of touch and even we have to work hard to score good marks in maths.
2. ENGLISH: Though I studied in English medium school, yet I was very poor in english. You can judge my knowledge of English by this " when for the first time I opened SP Bakshi for English, I have asked my friend that which is correct he dances or he dance".
3. GENERAL AWARENESS: My knowledge of GA is so good that I scored 2 marks in 2013 Tier -I exam.
4. REASONING: Before I started preparing for CGLE I have never studied Reasoning. However, after analysing previous year paper, I was confident of scoring good marks as I didn't find it too tough. First Attempt: I was not even able to clear tier I. Second attempt: This time I was damn serious. I had decided I will leave nothing for chance. BOOKS REFERRED:
MATHS: M. Tyra. Though it did not have MCQ based questions, yet I find it very good book for clearing concepts. LUCENT'S HIGHER MATHEMATICS PART-2: As MTyra did not cover Geometry and Algebra section. I had to cover Geometry and Algebra from this book. I find it very good book. ENGLISH: SP Bakshi. If I found something difficult to understand in this book, I searched it online. Grammar girl and some other blogs are very helpful. VOCABULARY: I read first page, editorials and sports page from TOI newspaper. I used to mark all words which I thought I was not clear about. There are many words which we think that we know but we get confused about the real meaning when we see the similar looking options in exam. I learnt everything about the word synonyms, antonyms, usage of word and preposition used with the word. I did this activity for 60 days without actually mugging any word. Just going thoroughly the meaning and usage of words. After I had some basic understanding, I started making list of good words. I purposely limited my words list to 200.

Strategy for SSC Tier I
The question paper comprises of 4 parts -
1) Quantitative aptitude
2) Logical Reasoning
3) English Language
4) General Studies
1) For Quantitative aptitude, brush up your basics. Select a good book. Practice as many questions, as many times, as you can. You can go for Kiran publication book for mathematics. It is a compilation of SSC questions chapter-wise. It is very beneficial for SSC exams specially for CGL, CHSL.
2) For Reasoning, refer to RS Agarwal. It will be good enough. Just practice and practice a lot. That will only save your life.
3) For English, refer to SP Bakshi for practicing questions and learning the rules. Read any one newspaper of your choice. It is better if you go for the Hindu. Otherwise any paper is fine. You better read editorials and news related to National and international events. It will serve two purpose. Improve your English language skills & also help in general studies. Focus on the sentences, how they are written. Point out the preposition, usage of for, with, within, of, off, at, etc. Have an eye on important words that are very frequently used, it will increase your vocab.
4) For general studies, refer to any one website e. g. gktoday etc. Or follow any magazine e. g. pratiyogita darpan etc. Follow any one source & only one source. Otherwise, you won't get time for other parts. Read Lucent for quick revision of history, geography, economics, general Science etc.

Basically, everything depends upon your understanding of the structure and pattern of the exam, and how well have you been prepared for every tits bit of its complete syllabus. Generally, you may follow these steps to gauge your level of preparation. Before you read ahead, make sure you know what the official syllabus is. Half knowledge is always dangerous, thus it is advisable to follow and prepare from the official syllabus released by the SSC for CGL. It helps in making a strategy on How you can Crack SSC CGL examination. You can easily figure out what kind of questions will be asked in the examination and which types of questions will be made for the topics of the syllabus.

Relax: One of the best things to do. People are posting questions should I leave my job to prepare for SSC CGL. And Which coaching I should join to clear SSC CGL. I mean, that's ridiculous. It's not CAT, UPSC or IIT JEE for which you have to leave your job or get enrolled in some kind of course. If you are from ISC/ICSE board then English is going to be a calk walk for you. Maths, the level that comes in the exam is a decent one. Highly somber. Waking up early or sleeping late at night should be your way to manage your time. Manage you day: Time management is very important. You need time to do you papers, revision, cram vocabulary words and the most cumbersome part : cramming GK. So for all these things you need to manage your time according to your weaker, Okay and strong areas. You'll have to disturb your nights for SSC CGL. Yes! That's true!
Internet Support: This is where coaching vanishes off. I would share my experience here. Go through Textbook blogs and GradeStack blogs. They have the best (don't trust me, go and check) compilation of GK notes and daily and chapter-wise quizzes.
Vocabulary: If it's your weak part, you'll have to work on it, because it gives you free marks. It is asked so directly that it takes 1 to 2 secs to answer and 2 marks in 1 sec is a big deal. Saves your time for a lot of other questions to answer.
Grammar: Grab your ISC board friends 12th class grammar book and read it like a novel. There are several rules hidden on each and every page. It gives you a list of all phrasal verbs, preposition phrases and many things. Its authors are Joseph and Myall. At least I used it for my preparation.
Previous Years Papers: Please take this part very seriously. You have to buy a practise book to do papers daily or you can buy previous year papers directly. This helps a lot. By this, you will get a gist of the pattern of the paper. Its simple and tough areas and then you can direct your studies accordingly.
General Awareness: This is the most gruesome part of the entire exam (for boys especially). This takes your whole testosterone to jot down everything and just cram. A complete no way out for boys. I mean cramming has always been a girl task, girls are far better than boys in cramming things. We boys are best in understanding things logically, but sorry you have to do this dirty job now.
