I might have missed a few companies.
The highest package of this year was from West Line Ship Management (21.6 LPA). I don't know how the placements are there in IIT'sand NIT's for mechanical but here in VIT, these are the companies visited this year till now. I hope few more companies may join in this list at the end of this 2016 academic year because still one more semester is there to complete this academic year.
NOTE: All these above-mentioned companies had taken in single digit numbers (min 1- max 10) and package ranging (3LPA-12LPA)
In simple words, companies do come, it's up to you to get placed.

First of all, let me make it clear to my fellow students that VIT, Pune is indeed Vishwakarma Institute of Technology and not Vellore Institute of Technology. Now coming to the question, both of these colleges are pretty good in terms of the quality of education they provide. Pune Institute of Computer Technology (PICT) was specially founded for imparting education in computer science and IT. It provides only three courses in B.Tech which are computer engineering, electronics and telecommunication and information technology while VIT provides degrees in almost all conventional branches. Talking about academics, PICT has an edge when it comes to CSE and IT. I have some friends pursuing IT there who confirmed upon this. The quality of education is pretty good. VIT also is a well-reputed college and has a high demand for CSE and IT. Apart from that, VIT is known for its extra curricular activities and campus life as such. I would suggest going through the syllabus of both the colleges and taking into consideration factors like location, campus, and future goals before making a decision. Best of luck!

VIT is one of the top ranked Private universities in India and it provide the placements around 90-100% and the maximum of the students get the average package from 4.5-60 LPA.
If we talk about the placement in last year i.e in 2016Packages given for mechanical engineers from VIT was moderate. I wouldn't say it is too high either. The placement percentage was around 94, which is a good number.
The highest package in the year 2016 was 22.6 L which was by West line ship management. The average package offered was 6.3 L, which is a reasonable amount.
These are the list of companies which recruited mechanical engineers in the year 2016
Fiat, Chrystler, Hyundai, Ford, Hexagon, Ashyi Glass, Seagate, Caterpillar, Maruti, L&T, Whirlpool, Renault, Nissan, Mahindra, Honeywell, Cummins, IFB, GMC, Hero Motocop , MRF, Cognizant.
The highest package is given only to one or two students who are extraordinary and have the full knowledge and passion about their BRANCH rest all are average student. So, please do not get attracted by the highest package just because usually MECHANICAL engineers do get this package because it is the core branch but only to those who is best in that field.

Regarding biomedical engineering as its an emerging field, there exists a great career to the aspirants who involve themselves in biomedicals. You should not expect much placements for the biomedical field much in all the colleges.

B.Tech in ME from BITS PILANI is better option then doing it from VIT due to following concerns
BITS Pilani is a preferred destination to recruit from, for a large number of companies. We feel validated in the quality of education and experience we provide to our students when a majority of our students are successfully placed on campus. Each of our programmes are designed to give our students a balanced education with theory as well as practical knowledge. In addition, they are encouraged to participate in extra curricular activities as it helps them develop soft skills and develop well rounded personalities. It is this that differentiates our students and makes them a valuable part of any company they join
Infrastructure: The College is under renovation and till 2020 it will be among the best colleges of India in terms of education as well as infrastructure. Renovated hostels have Wi-Fi facility. Library is world class. It has A.C. halls as well as non-A.C. rooms. Hostel rooms are good in condition. Labs and classrooms are not in a very good condition but after the renovation, they will be.
Sports facilities are very good. A separate area is being alloted for each and every sport.
Faculty: Faculty of the college is unlike those of other private colleges. They are very knowledgeable, helping and motivating.
The college has modern technology like projectors, videos are used to give examples or to explain the applications. Student to faculty ratio is 30:1 which is good enough. The course curriculum is good. Regular surveys are conducted to check if the students are facing any problems related to academics.
Moreover, you can use shiksha college compare: https://www.shiksha.com/resources/college-comparison

I would go for VIT any day just because the college has a better reputation ranking 6th on the list of the best private, while SRM ranks 11th on the same list.
Life at VIT is a little more hectic and restricting than life at SRM, this is because of the fact that you will have to solve daily assignments and your classes runs from 8:00 to 7:00 if you belong to CSE in the first year, this is the case at VIT.
While at SRM, you have classes till 5:00 in the first year, and there are no such assignments. Also, you get to go out as many times as you want to, unlike VIT.
So in clear sense, you get to have much more freedom at SRM.
Placements:
More core companies visit VIT in comparison to SRM and so the placements at VIT are certainly a lot better.
Fees:
You have to pay a lot more at SRM if you happen to secure a rank more than SRMJEEE than you get to pay at VIT. Also, the hostel facility is also more expensive at SRM than in comparison to VIT.
With this, I hope you make the right choice.
Cheers!

Please mention your rank in VITEEE with marks. I think it's too late for deciding to join VIT, Vellore or Chennai campus because in both the campus admission has been closed for all the branches but for your information I can say that if your rank is good like under 6000 then there will be many options for you in terms of branches including you can get CSE branch also with some specialisation here. Also whatever fee structure you have seen in brochure is just for category 1, not other categories if your rank is low then also you can get CSE branch but fee structure will change for you means fee structure of category in which you are.
You should go for counseling process also which is the first step towards admission. If you have done counseling then you can contact VIT office. You can get VIT contact number on its website. For more information please mention your rank in VITEEE because there is very wide spectrum which will surely depend on your rank.
Try to be in VIT, Vellore if possible otherwise Chennai is also good.
