It will depend on the nature of your gap. Gaining work experience won't jeopardize your chances but then they will check the quality of work, relevancy with your education, etc. Overall you should have a good profile and your career plans must be clear to have a good application.

To be considered for application you must take the GRE and TOEFL. Apart from these exams you must have a very strong all-rounded profile, excellent academic grades in your Bachelor's degree, outstanding project work and research work, if you have publications it's very good, a good number of extracurricular activities are also seemed. Normally, a student's whole future orientation is fixed by the subjects chosen for 12th. In your case it's commerce. Therefore I am afraid you will have to stick with commerce.
But I would like to point out to you that commerce, today has the highest probability of getting job or starting off as an entrepreneur.
