(a) By appearing in CDS exam conducted by UPSC. CDS entry consists of written exam conducted by the UPSC, followed by conduct of the SSB interview, medical test by Indian Navy (naval candidates only) and final preparation of merit list by UPSC. The appointment letter is issued by IHQ MoD/DMPR. The training of officers selected through this entry commences in the month of Jan/Jul and the advertisement is published in Nov/Jul. (b) University Entry Scheme conducted by three services Army, Navy and Indian Air force in pre final year of Engineering. (c) Direct Permanent Commission and Short Service Commission by appearing in SSB against open advertisement of three services Army, Navy and Indian Air force in final year or completion of engineering degree. The Direct entries are controlled by each service HQ and cater for both Permanent Commission (PC) and Short Service Commission (SSC). Advertisements calling for application from eligible candidates for such entries are published in the leading newspapers and Employment News twice in a year between Feb to May and Aug to Nov. The applications are received and candidates are shortlisted for SSB based on cut off decided by MoD.

The college has a reputation maintained for excellence in the course offered particularly for undergraduate courses. The placements are higher in almost every branch. For civil engineering branch, one can expect an average placement package of around Rs 4 Lacs considering the placement record in the year 2016. Also, the highest placement package obtained by a student of the batch 2017 in the civil department was Rs 17.5 Lacs by VGN which happened to take only 4 students from the whole batch. The number of core companies coming for placements in the college is less for the civil department. The reason why I would not recommend you to go for admission in the college particularly in the civil branch unless you don't have any other better option to pursue civil engineering.

Some of the reputable names are Huawei, Ericsson, IBM, VMware, Cisco with international offers as well. Training and placement cell of the university achieved noticeable success in helping the students to reach their avenues. A total of 506 students have been successfully placed with attractive salary packages in reputed national and international organizations during last academic session. Average Salary is 4 LPA and median is 6 LPA. The highest salary varies every year and hence the below link would give deep drill down insights about how students have received offers from various sectors and bifurcated according to their specialisation.

Around 90-95% of students from CSE/IT department gets placed in some or the other companies. The package could be as low as 2.8 Lacs or it could be high as 25 Lacs (although only 2 students got that in the entire history), but students at least got a job. Few of the reputed (core CSE) companies which visited the campus in the past few years are Adobe, Amazon, HP, Hike Messenger, etc. Other than this, there are certain other companies such as Ivy Computech, Josh Technologies which also provide a handsome salary. The mass recruiters such as Infosys, Wipro, Cognizant visits every year to recruit a bulk of students. Most of the companies which visit the campus are CSE or IT companies so these two branches have a huge number of opportunities here.

The state-of-the-art facilities (wind tunnels/supercomputing facilities) provide for easy experimenting. The professors are adept at carrying out research and teaching. This is mostly because 80% of them are IIT alumni-US Ph.D. So they have a very good understanding of how IITians should be taught. Having gone through similar experiences, they are always willing to help out. This is a huge advantage. Aerospace and automobile companies contribute to most of the core sector placements in the branch. Rolls Royce, Airbus, GE, Honeywell, TATA Motors, Mercedes Benz RnD, Mahindra, QuEST Global, Mathworks, Lennox, TVS Motors, Eaton, Atkins, and MRF are a few I can name off the top of my head (in no specific order) that came over this year. Aerospace start-ups and consultancies in the country come for placements too. CFD and FEA profiles are well in demand. Flight mechanics, controls, combustion and thermal engineering also come up occasionally. However, IIT-Kanpur is a bit different from most other IITs in terms of academics. Our grading system goes 10, 8, 6, 4, 2. In most other IITs it is something like 10, 9, 8, 7 That automatically means that if the professor doesn't think you deserve A, you get 8 in IITK and 9 in most other IITs. This worsens as the grade drops to C or D. This puts us at a disadvantage. Also, it is said (I can't verify this) that IITK was built more around research and thus they have higher standards and expectations. As a result, academics at IITK are considered tough.

IIT-Kharagpur offers some great offers in the international domain with the highest salary up to 82 LPA by Rio Into for Latin American operations in big data analysis role for environmental safety experience. Indian Conglomerates have been lately recruiting some top quality engineers from this institution for roles like HSE safety, Procurement specialist, Field operations, resource analyst, Energy conservation associate, Disaster management as well as some management roles start from career considering top cadre learning induced at IIT. On an average, 8 LPA has been the median salary with the lowest being 4 LPA. Overall, all the students are placed.

One of best institutions for bringing the variety of core job roles in Telecom, Embedded design, VLSI, Robotics, Mechatronics, Chip Design and total quality management roles which fall in the premium range. Some of the core companies which visit for placement are Qualcomm, Huawei, Intel, Ericsson, NVidia, Analog Devices Ltd, Broadcom, Cisco Systems, Texas Instruments, Cosmic circuits, Ericsson India Global Services, Bharti Airtel, Eaton technologies, IBM, Schneider Electric, General Electric, Xiaomi, Micromax, Vodafone, Reliance Jio, etc. Electrical engineering students from IIT typically find jobs in core electrical engineering companies such as Intel, Ericsson or in conglomerates such as Reliance Industries, Tata Technology, Aditya Birla, Vmware, etc. , that have the electronics division. Some students also find jobs in banking, consulting and finance industries as well as marketing roles in Technology and Telecommunication sector.

There are not many core companies that come for the placement for mechanical engineering since the team has not been updated with industry tie-ups, it generally uses alumni connect for placements which make them very mediocre.
65% of the students were placed. The highest package given was of 7.5LPA and the lowest was 1 5LPA. Some prominent recruiters are given below:
