However, as per the rank, his chances are there for NITs but from boards marks, it seems he is not eligible for admission as a minimum of 65% marks is needed.

If you are interested in pursuing a course in science you can go for various B.Sc like physics, chemistry, botany, zoology, maths, etc. Other than these, you have specialised ones like biotechnology, biochemistry, microbiology, forensic, agriculture, food technology, computer science, etc. Apart from these, you have honors courses too. In Delhi, few years back cutoff for a particular category of students for admission to B Com was 98%. But don't worry. These days admissions are via a common pool and it goes strictly as per merit. Hence, you have very bright chances.

Please check with your college about different rules for improvement. Can you wait for one year etc. Till you get result of improvement, your present marks list of 12th remains valid. It's superseded only if your marks are improved in improvement exam.

Why are you obsessed with Engineering? It's not the end if the world. With your marks, you can get admission only in a private college may be through management quota only. But I will definitely advise you to think of career in commerce, Humanities, fine arts, eco, etc.
