Any engineer graduate can enter into Defence Services as an Officer by following methods:
(a) Appear in CDS exam conducted by UPSC.
(b) Application against Direct Recruitment advertisement of Permanent or Short Service Commission
(c) Students studying in the Pre-Final year of the Engineering Course in recognized Universities/Institution/ Colleges in the subjects are eligible to apply for University Entry Scheme.
(d) NCC "C" Certificate holders engineering graduate can directly apply for SSB to join Defence Services.

You have to pursue a 4-year BE/B.Tech Marine engineering course on the completion of which you qualify to become a fifth engineering onboard a merchant ship. You can also become a fifth engineer after completing a one-year graduate mechanical engineering course prior to which you should have completed BE/B.Tech in mechanical engineering.
