Yes, candidates must carry their GATE admit card with a valid photo identity card (original). The ID card must be the same as the one in the GATE application form.

The GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering) comprises multiple-choice questions (MCQs) as well as numerical answer-type questions (NAT). The MCQs have four options, out of which candidates have to select the correct one. In NAT questions, candidates need to enter a numerical value as the answer using a virtual keypad. You can add a second paper after submitting the GATE application form. Follow the steps below to add a secondary paper to the GATE application form. 

• Visit the official GATE website

• Click on the application link, and you will be redirected to the GOAPS portal.

• Login using the credentials - GATE enrollment ID and password

• The application form status will be displayed on the screen

• On the screen, there will be an option to add GATE paper. Click on the link 

• Select and make the payment for the desired GATE paper

• Keep a copy of the payment receipt for future reference.

You can change the category only during the GATE application correction process. The GATE 2026 application form correction window will be activated at the GOAPS portal after the completion of the GATE registration process. 

It is important to follow the guidelines while choosing a two-paper combination for the GATE examination. Here are some important instructions that the candidate must follow -

• The chosen paper must align with the discipline of their qualifying degree.

• Candidates are free to choose any paper according to their admission plan, considering the eligibility criteria of the institutions to which they seek admission.

Candidates can apply for either one or two papers only. They must choose the papers from the set of two-paper combinations listed in the GATE information brochure or GATE official website.
