If you take FPGA used for implementing DSP applications, you need knowledge of DSP algorithms. But the challenge is more towards designing the hardware than writing algorithms for filters which is not tough as there is a lot of references already available. Most of the engineering jobs related to DSP do not actually require that much mathematics which is generally taught in the curriculum. There is more expectation of writing C/MATLAB synthesized codes.
