In India, BDS (Bachelor of Dental Surgery) and MDS (Master of Dental Surgery) are two distinct levels of Dental education, each with its own curriculum, focus, and career outcomes.

Here are the key differences between BDS and MDS courses:

Particulars

BDS

MDS

Degree Level

BDS is an undergraduate programme that provides foundational knowledge and skills in various aspects of dentistry.

MDS is a postgraduate programme that follows BDS and offers specialised training and advanced education in specific branches or specializations of dentistry.

Clinical Training

Clinical training in BDS focuses on developing basic clinical skills across different areas of dentistry, including diagnosis, treatment planning, restorative dentistry, oral surgery, periodontics, and pediatric dentistry.

Clinical training in MDS is specialised and intensive, providing hands-on experience and advanced training in specialised procedures within the chosen specialization.

Career Opportunities

Graduates of BDS programs are qualified to practice as general dentists after obtaining necessary licensure. They can work in private clinics, hospitals, government health services, or pursue further education and specialization.

MDS graduates have advanced knowledge and skills in specialised areas of dentistry, which opens up opportunities for specialised clinical practice, teaching positions in dental colleges, research positions, hospital dentistry, consulting, and leadership roles in the dental industry.

After finishing MDS, dentists have many job and study options to grow their skills and career:

  • Clinical Practice: Many MDS doctors work in clinics or open their own dental clinic.

  • Academia and Research: Some go to teach or do research. Doing PhD can give more chances in teaching and research.

  • More Learning and Certificates: MDS doctors can do workshops, classes, and conferences to learn new things and get extra certificates.

No, MDS graduates can't be called doctor. Usually, only people with PhD, MD, or other big doctor degree can be called doctor.

MDS is master degree, so they not usually called doctor unless they also have PhD or another doctor degree.

No, you don't have to do MDS after BDS. MDS is for special study in dentistry, and people can choose if they want to do more after BDS.

After BDS, you can work as normal dentist and do many dental work.

If you happy with general dentist work and don't need more special skills, then MDS not needed.

BDS is a 5 years UG dental course. You learn both theory and practical in many dental subjects like teeth anatomy, body stuff, biochemistry, disease, microbes, and clinical dentistry.

MDS is a 3 years PG dental course. You study more in one special area, do research, and practice on patients.
