AME is originally started and run by IAF to cater their need related to their aircrafts. IAF conducts an entrance exam called Airmen exam. 5 years term. You will be paid and taught engineering. After successfully finish absorbed into OAF as commissioned officer with a designation Aircraft maintenance engineer. Without your signature no aircraft can make a fly. You will always certify that the craft is worth flying.
But, nowadays, private players also come into this. No comments.

It all depends on what is your aim or passion in life. Actually, after graduation itself many doors are opened for different paths that life can take. Employment, teaching, further studies, going abroad etc. You can think of giving civil Services exam. CAT or GATE. But, ask yourself a question. Where do you see yourself after 5/10/15 years? There lies your answer.
