Hi, preparing for UPSC not only needs hard work but smart work, when talking about the syllabus of UPSC it is limitless, but smart work can enhance your preparation. For this, I believe you need to study NCERT books mainly from class 9th to class 12th for subjects like polity and geography. NCERT textbook on microfinance for class 11th and class 12; NCERT text book biology of class 12th botany for ecology; NCERT class 9th - class 10th for Science and technology and NCERT class 6th to class 12th for History and Art and Culture. Additionally, you need to follow The Hindu newspaper for current affair updates. Keeping an account of previous year UPSC questions shall add-on to your preparation. You may prepare notes of NCERTs in your own way by giving a thorough reading to them. It is advised to compile all the above mentioned work in big fat notebook, so that at the end your preparation revision narrows down to reading that notebook and you are all set for UPSC. Hi Aman, UPSC exam in its official website itself recommends to only and strictly follow NCERT books for the preparation and many a times questions are either directly fetched or moulded from the NCERT textbooks itself along with current affairs updates from newspaper The Hindu and The Indian Express. Along with them, you may go for M. Laxmikanth book for polity of India and study of constitution. Also, Economics is the subject you need to go with +1 and +2 macrofinance books and for the rest of the subjects it would be advisable to go through NCERT books from 7th standard to 12th standard for all geography, history, art and culture, polity. If this sounds like a burden then it is mandatory to follow up with NCERT textbooks of 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th class. For Ecology preparation, botany book of +2 is enough to read. Hi, This is the dilemma I have recently gone through and now can perfectly advise you not to go follow the herd. It is not at all required to join some famed institute in Delhi for the preparation of UPSC as most of the results displayed at the institutes of Delhi are fake and forged. This exam demands reading and devoting time to subjects as much as you can and many of my near ones have cleared it via self study itself. But for the beginner it is advisable to join coaching not for the learning sake but guidance sake that how and which direction to follow correctly towards achievement in these exams. Rest, it all depends upon the devotion and enthusiasm of the one who is preparing for it since every subject of UPSC preparation is generalised in nature that is why they name it general studies which can only be self prepared and not inculcated in you from any external source.
