Apart from the static topics like history, geography and polity, UPSC now focuses on the present issues. So, to begin, be updated with the recent issues. For example, Bangladesh PM was in India to discuss Teesta water sharing and there was a question on Teesta river in UPSC prelims 2017. So, in a way, you can predict some of the questions. Present government schemes are very important. As for geography, focus on maps and Indian flora and fauna distribution. Modern history is another important area, especially the Indian national movement. Apart from this, go through previous year question papers to see the pattern and study accordingly

Going by the present standards, there is no subject which is perfectly scoring. It all depends on how you perform. Still science is optional and in humanities, geography and sociology are quite scoring. But this year, toppers have got huge marks in optional like public administration which is considered as not so scoring.
Hence, choose that subject in which you really have interest. If it's your graduation subject, it would be preferable. But even then, you can choose any other. Just be prepared to study it continuously. So choose that subject which you can read again and again.

After graduation, you have a chance to appear for civil services exam conducted by the Central or state government. Mainly exam is conducted in 3 part i.e prelims, Mains and interview. For the preparation, try to make your general knowledge strong and choose one optional subject which is really good for you.
