The main campus of TAMUK occupies around 250 acres and the University Farm occupies 545 acres of land. In all, TAMUK has more than 1,600 acres of land located at 13 different sites. The university operates sites specifically dedicated to research including the Citrus Center, a Marine Sciences Ecology Research area on Baffin Bay, a wildlife part on the north edge of the main campus and natural wildlife habitat about 3 miles south of the main campus. In addition to this, the university also owns two commercial farms that provide source of revenue to partially support scholarships.

The history of TAMUK goes back to the early 1900s. The university was chartered in 1917 but opened in 1925. It is a public university. Furthermore, TAMUK is among the top 5 public schools in the 2023 Payscale College Salary Report. The graduates of the university rank the highest of all public university graduates in South Texas.
