No, Its not mandatory. Still you need it for qualifying the entrance examination as it is a BTech course.

Biotechnology is a vast topic to cover in a few sentences. It mostly deals with genetics and molecular and cellular and nuclear level of practical studies of living cells. It is one of the most sought after career and if you are lucky enough, you can earn a lot but then again you have to work hard and study a lot.

It totally depends upon your interest. If you are interested into the subject you must go for it. It's always better to do what you want to do than what others want you to do.
