The author has been specifically referring to the disasters the use of mercury has caused around the world. So, option A is the best choice here. Option B is not the immediate defiance author is talking about as it's not a cause but an effect.

'Thus' of 3rd sentence forms the explanation for the 2nd sentence and 'for example' in 1st forms the example of the same. Other options don not follow this sequence in the beginning.
