Candidates who have twelve years of school education with minimum of five subjects by the National Open School or from a recognised board are eligible for the BDes at NIFT Chennai. Additionally, as per the Institution's guidelines, candidate's maximum age should be less than 24 years (5 years relaxation in upper age for people from reserved categories). Now candidates are only required to appear for the NIFT entrance exam for BDes admission.

The eligibility criteria for the Fashion Design course in India do vary from college to college, but the basic eligibility criteria followed by them have been mentioned below:
- Aspirants who have cleared their Class 12 from any stream (Science/ Commerce/ Arts) can pursue a Fashion Design course at the graduate level.
- For PG level, aspirants who have completed a similar course at the graduate level are preferred for admission.
- Students are advised to appear for popular common entrance exams to increase their chances of getting accepted into best Fashion Designing Colleges in India.
