IIIT Kancheepuram offers three specialisations for MDes programme, Product Design, Mechanical System Design, and, Communication System Design. Admission to these specialisations is entrance-based and depends on candidates' performance in the Common Entrance Exam for Design, popularly known as CEED, conducted by  IIT Bombay. Applicants who have taken CEED examination can exempt from Test 1 of SMEAT if their All India Rank is 500 or below provided they are able to submit their result at the time of application.
