The time required to prepare for the MTech in Thermal Engineering entrance test cannot be said with any certainty, but you should start preparing at least 8 months before the final exam is tentatively scheduled to take place. Starting early will give you a lot of time to cover the exam syllabus in detail, practicing last year question papers, taking up mock tests, and also revision in the last month. All of this will increase your chances to getting excellent marks and getting selected for admission to the M Tech Thermal Engineering course.

After the exam results are out and you've got your scorecard, you need to apply for the college counseling that is meant for seat allotment purposes.

The general duration of an M.Tech degree in Thermal Engineering is 2 years in India. Almost all of the regular M.Tech courses are 2 years long, except for part-time MTech, which may take 3 years, or the integrated BTech-MTech or MTech-PhD courses that take 5 years to complete. During the entire course duration of MTech Thermal Engineering, you will be exposed to engaging classroom lectures, project work, industrial visits, lab classes, and a final-year dissertation.

There is no straight forward answer to your question as it largely depends on your interests and future plans. If you want to explore the field of thermal energy and related systems on an advanced level with technical expertise in the concepts of heat transfer, HVAC, and thermodynamics, you will enjoy the 2-year academic ride. You can also go for a PhD in this field after completing a master's degree.

The earning potential is quite decent in this field with rewarding opportunities, especially in the research and academic domains. Having said that, you must have a strong portfolio with internship experience and research projects to stand
