Hi Rohan,
IT IS VERY DIFFICULT. Every year around start of May, the application process starts, and the interviews are in June end. (Approximately, because the dates change as per the administration's convenience, please keep a check on the website for this)
Let me tell you the selection process, Every year 26 students are selected out of which 13 seats are reserved for different castes. The 26 that are selected are from various states, say every year only 2 students or a max of 3 can be selected from one particular state(this is not stated in the rules and regulations but this is a fact that you will come to know once you go through all

Getting into Discovery or NatGeo doesn't always need you to be an expert in Wildlife/Nature. For example, a finance/sales guy can also get a job in an IT company in their respective departments. So you should first look for a post where you fit in to apply in Discovery and NetGeo. If you are lucky and get a chance, you can join and go for your passion in there.
All the best.

Being a journalism myself, I can very well relate to it. See, mass communication and journalism is a field which need more skills and passion as compared to book knowledge. Talking about its scope, it is having a very wide scope, right from print, electronic, radio, television, advertising, content, PR and a lot of other fields, this will offer you ample opportunities. All you need is dedication and hard work if you want to become successful. All the best. Go for it if your heart wants to go with journalism.
