You know this is the best job in the world (apart from being a host for jazzy fancy cars/ gadgets show where you get to drive/ review them). I'm assuming you are talking about a show where you get to taste different dishes while taking a city tour across the country or the world (and NOT a cooking show).
Imagine, taking a leisurely stroll in the beautiful mornings of February along with a rustic lane in Lucknow where Awadhi cuisine is the mainstay. You halt at an age old Kebab shop and devour a couple of galouti kebabs while slowing enjoying the flavor and taste of the shredded mutton beautifully melting in your mouth. Yum. You sprinkle a few drops of lemon on it and gorge of the onions making it a complete dish. Wow!
Now doesn't that sound simply fantastic! Free food and travel plus get to be on TV? Hurray. But why you? What have you done or achieved that people should hear you talk and taste food? What qualifies you for this? What makes you the person whom people would want to listen and devote their time?
Now we come to the question: How? First most food show hosts are people who have a culinary background. At least in India. Second, they all have a gift of gab. You know a talent in speaking, an art of talking about even the most mundane dish in such a way that you are mesmerized by it. Eg: Sliced Eggplant can also be used to put on your pizza Vs Sauteed and caramelized aubergine sliced into gorgeous wafer pieces decorating the Parmesan filled crust to bring a pop to the dish.
The second statement is not untrue, it just portrays a better picture and shows that the person has a slightly better idea about what he is talking about.
Third, a personality and an affable nature is really required to be on any show. You should be someone who exudes confidence and inspires a happy demeanor. People should be happy to see you on TV and be excited when you make all those 'umm', 'aa', sound while tasting food. Have you ever seen a photograph of Sanjeev Kapoor or Kunal Kapur not smiling? Have you seen the way, Late MS. Tarla Dalal used to speak on TV? They were all simply fabulous! They wanted to make you eat more by their mere words! Aside from the fact that they are all the creme-de la creme of the culinary world they all, also have a fantastic personality! And they know their food!
