It's an interesting query that you have raised. However, the answer is most straightforward. There is a saying which says "beauty is in the eyes of the beholder". Meaning what I perceive as beautiful, others may not perceive it that way. So is the case with different branches of engineering. There are people who will perceive each of these branches as best. I would say that what you like is the best as far as you are concerned & what I like is best as far as I am concerned.

There are a very few job vacancies in mechatronics for freshers in very few organisations. Since you will not study some core subjects of mechanical engineering, you won't be able to clear GATE or any other exam. It might be a problem a problem if your goal is to do job.
For knowledge and projects- mechatronics:
It's obviously better in many ways. Thing is that you will neither be as good as a mechanical engineer nor as good as an electronics engineer so all you would be able to do is make projects and learn about both fields simultaneously. After your Diploma you can go for B.Tech Lateral Entry in any of the streams. It will be of 3 years rather than normal B.Tech, which is of 4 years. It means you can straight way enroll into 2nd year of your Bachelor's degree. Students prefer this course with an idea of securing a well-paid job after the completion of their professional degree course.
