Admissions at NID Jorhat are both entrance-based and merit-based. Merit-based admissions are used at Banaras Hindu University's (BHU) Faculty of Law. This indicates that candidates are chosen based on both their academic standing and how well they performed on the admission exam.

Candidates must take the Banaras Hindu University Undergraduate Entrance Test (UET) in order to be considered for undergraduate admissions. Every year, the UET is held in April or May.

Candidates must take the Post Graduate Entrance Exam (PET) in order to be considered for postgraduate admissions. Every year in December or January, the PET is conducted.

The academic standing of candidates in their qualifying examination is taken into consideration in addition to their entrance examination score. The following minimal requirements must be met in order to be admitted to BHU's Faculty of Law:

A bachelor's degree in any field with a minimum of 50% in marks is required for undergraduate courses.
Master's degree in law or any other relevant field with at least 55% of the possible points is required for postgraduate courses.
A candidate will be shortlisted for subsequent rounds of selection, which may include individual interviews and group discussions, if they satisfy the eligibility requirements and receive a high score on the entrance exam.

According to the university board Students are admitted in unreserved and various reserved categories strictly on the basis of merit in the respective category through an entrance examination as per the reservation rules of Jharkhand state. Semester system of education is followed in the University.

Admission to different undergraduate programmes is done through bifold procedure. 15% of total seats are filled by a Combined Competitive Entrance Examination conducted by I.C.A.R. V.C.I. at All India level and 85% of the total seats are filled by Jharkhand Combined Competitive Entrance Examination Board, Ranchi. The minimum qualification is Intermediate/10+2 or its equivalent with Physics, Chemistry and Biology for all undergraduate degree programmes. However, the candidates with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics are also eligible for admission into B.Sc. (Ag) and B.Sc. (Forestry). Students are admitted in unreserved and various reserved categories strictly on the basis of merit in the respective category through an entrance examination as per the reservation rules of Jharkhand state. Semester system of education is followed in the University. Each semester consists of approximately 115 working days. The residential requirements for the award of Bachelor’s degree is eight semesters including Rural work Experience in B.Sc. (Ag.) and B.Sc. (Forestry), during the last semester. The residential requirements of B.V.Sc. & A.H. Course is of 10 Semesters. The last Semester consists of 6 month compulsory internship programme.
