Based on JEE Main rankings, the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) handles counselling and seat distribution. The Bihar Combined Entrance Competitive Examination, or BCECE, is required for admission to a number of Bihar-based engineering and medical schools; NITs are exempt. However, through JoSAA counselling, aspirants from Bihar can use their JEE Main marks to get into NIT Patna. BCECE is not a regular route for NIT Patna, although certain quotas or schemes like DASA (Direct Admission of Students Abroad) may offer other option

The latest cutoff information for the admission for M.Tech in computer science and engineering at NIT Patna is 6054 for computer science and engineering (Data science)and 7434 for computer science and engineering (cuber security)
These are the cutoff ranks with respect to GATE entrance exam other exams accepted are DASA etc.

NIT Patna accepts JEE Main ranks for admission to the BTech courses. NIT Patna Round 5 Cutoff was released for candidates under the AI and the HS quota. The most competitive course, for the General AI category candidates was Computer Science and Engineering with the closing Cutoff rank of 14442. The easiest course to get into NIT Patna, for the General AI category students was BTech in Civil Engineering, with the Round 5 cutoff rank of 46400.

Both IIIT Bhagalpur and NIT Patna are well reputed institutes and are highly preferred by students.
IIIT Bhagalpur has been ranked 40 under the NIRF, whereas NIT Patna has been ranked 56, in the year 2023. The placement records of both the institutes are relatively good with 100 percent at IIIT Bhagalpur and 80-85 percent for NIT Patna.
the highest package offered at IIIT Bhagalpur was INR 89 lacs approximately, while that of NIT Patna was INR 52 Lacs per annum.
