To be recognised as a licensed Clinical Psychologist in India, you must have completed an MPhil in Clinical Psychology from an RCI approved institute, as this is the minimum qualification for RCI registration.

You can work as a counselor, and/or mental health educator, and/or psychology teacher without an MPhil, but you cannot be a licensed Clinical Psychologist who conducts clinical assessments and therapy.

A Clinical Psychologist is trained to do therapy and assess mental health. They can use psychological methods like CBT, counselling, and behavioural therapy to treat emotional and psychological disorders - they cannot prescribe medicines.

A Psychiatrist is a medical practitioner (MBBS + MD Psychiatry) with the ability to prescribe psychiatric medication, and to treat severe mental illness such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, or psychosis, using a medical treatment approach.

Psychiatrists are medical doctors who specialize in diagnosing and treating mental health disorders with a focus on medication management. They are essential for individuals with severe mental health conditions like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, or depression that may require pharmacological treatment.

On the other hand, psychologists focus on therapeutic approaches, including psychotherapy and behavioural interventions, to help people cope with emotional, mental, and behavioural issues.

For individuals seeking therapy and behavioural change without medication, a psychologist might be the better choice.
