A:

MD Psychiatry stands for Doctor of Medicine in Psychiatry, a postgraduate medical degree focused on diagnosing, treating, and managing mental health disorders. Q:   What is the difference between DNB Psychiatry and MD Psychiatry?
A:

MD Psychiatry is a PG degree awarded by medical universities, while DNB Psychiatry is offered by the National Board of Examinations (NBE) in India, typically through accredited hospitals or institutions.

Both qualifications cover similar areas of psychiatric study, including diagnosis and treatment of mental health disorders, but the DNB is often considered more hands-on and practical in its approach due to its hospital-based training.

However, both degrees are recognised by medical councils and lead to equivalent professional standing, allowing practitioners to pursue careers as psychiatrists.

Q:   Can I do MD Psychiatry without an MBBS?
A:

No, you cannot pursue an MD Psychiatry without an MBBS degree.

The MD Psychiatry is a postgraduate medical course that requires candidates to first complete an MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery), which is a foundational medical degree.

After obtaining an MBBS, candidates can apply for MD Psychiatry, which involves specialised training in mental health disorders, diagnosis, and treatment. Without an MBBS, one cannot meet the eligibility criteria for MD Psychiatry.

Q:   Is DPM equivalent to MD Psychiatry?
A:

No, a DPM (Diploma in Psychological Medicine) is not equivalent to an MD Psychiatry. DPM is a diploma-level qualification in psychiatry, typically a two-year course pursued after completing an MBBS degree. It provides specialised training in the field of psychiatry but is not as extensive as the MD Psychiatry, which is a three-year postgraduate degree.

While both qualifications enable doctors to practice psychiatry, MD Psychiatry offers more in-depth and comprehensive training compared to DPM. MD Psychiatry is considered a higher qualification and holds more recognition in the medical community compared to DPM.

Q:   What is the future of MD Psychiatry in India?
A:

The future of MD Psychiatry in India looks promising, with increasing recognition of mental health as a critical aspect of overall well-being. As awareness about mental health issues grows, there is a rising demand for qualified psychiatrists to address conditions such as depression, anxiety, and stress-related disorders, which are becoming more prevalent.

The Indian government has also been focusing on mental health initiatives, such as the Mental Healthcare Act and the National Mental Health Policy, which are expected to enhance access to mental health services and create more opportunities for mental health professionals.

Additionally, the rapid advancements in research, psychiatry-based technology, and telemedicine are likely to further elevate the role of psychiatrists in the healthcare system.

Q:   What is the salary of a MD Psychiatry in India?
A:

The salary for MD Psychiatry professionals in India can vary based on experience, location, and the type of institution they work in.

Here's a general breakdown of salary levels at different career stages:

  • Entry-Level (0-3 years): INR 6-10 LPA

  • Mid-Level (4-10 years): INR 12-18 LPA

  • Senior-Level (10+ years): INR 20-30 LPA

Q:   Who earns more among a Psychologist and a Psychiatrist?
A:

The average salary of a Psychologist is 3.9 LPA while that of a Psychiatrist is INR 12.1 LPA.

In general, psychiatrists earn more than psychologists due to their medical background and ability to prescribe medications. Psychiatrists are medical doctors (MDs) who specialize in diagnosing and treating mental health disorders through medication and therapy.

On the other hand, psychologists, particularly clinical psychologists, focus on therapy and counselling.

Q:   Who is the highest-paid Psychiatrist?
A:

The highest-paid psychiatrists typically work in private practice or prestigious healthcare institutions, where they can command higher fees due to their experience, expertise, and reputation.

Renowned psychiatrists with specialised expertise in areas like child psychiatry (avg. INR 3.3 LPA), addiction psychiatry (avg. INR 32 LPA), or forensic psychiatry (avg. INR 4 LPA) tend to earn more due to the demand for their specialised services.

Psychiatrists who also take on roles as medical directors, and consultants for large organizations, or who work with high-profile clients (such as celebrities or corporate executives) may also see significantly higher earnings.

MD Psychiatry FAQs

Candidates can refer below for MD Psychiatry FAQs.

Q:   Which is better among MD medicine or DNB medicine?
A:

Hi Renu, A few years back I would have told MS/MD is better than DNB for the simple reason that the selection process for DNB was highly suspect. You getting into a DNB program depended on the right kind of people you knew or on the mercy of the institute you were working as a medical officer. It wasn't at all fair. There was no credibility for the doctor getting in. Also pass percentage was extremely low. But things have changed since 2010.

There is an All India DNB entrance exam and a central counselling process for both primary and secondary DNB which now adds credibility to the course. Also now with Supreme Court order removing that last strand of ambiguity saying DNB and MS/MD is equivalent I don't see why I should not recommend DNB. The biggest advantage of DNB is that they get to work in the best facilities, in the top institutes with large resources available and always on the cutting edge of work done. In conclusion I would say both are equivalent and of the same value when it comes to jobs. The center you do it is more important than the MD/MS/DNB label. Hope it helps. Please feel free to revert. Click on the thumbs up or mark it as the best, if you found this useful. Wish You Luck!

Q:   What is the difference between a psychologist and a psychiatrist?
A:

Both psychologists and psychiatrists deal with mental health issues, but their approaches are different. The difference is:

  • The psychiatrist studies for a medical degree to become a doctor of medicine (M. D. in Psychiatry). They have to appear in the NEET UG exam to attain MBBS and are called doctors. On the other hand, a psychologist studies for an M.Sc or MA in clinical psychology. He or she may also study further to attain a PhD. They will also be required to take the RCI exam to gain the RCI license to practice.
  • Psychiatrists have the authority to diagnose and treat patients with medication. whereas psychologists usually have to enlist the help of therapy.
  • Psychiatrists are mostly employed at hospitals as doctors. Whereas psychologists work as counsellors.
  • Psychiatrists are usually consulted when a person is experiencing severe mental issues. However, a psychologist can be consulted whenever the need arises for counselling. For example, in the case of phobia, you can go to a psychologist.
Q:   What is super specialization after MD Psychiatry?
A:

After completing MD Psychiatry, psychiatrists can pursue super-specialization in various fields to further specialize and enhance their expertise.

Some of the popular super-speciality options include:

  • Child and Adolescent Psychiatry

  • Geriatric Psychiatry

  • Forensic Psychiatry

  • Addiction Psychiatry

  • Neuropsychiatry

  • Psychosomatic Medicine

  • Adult Psychiatry

Hi.

The eligibility criteria for B.Pharm at SPR mention that candidates must have passed 10+2 (with required subjects) + a valid entrance exam score (or equivalent).

The criteria specify a minimum academic performance (minimum 45% in 12th for general category, 40% for reserved).

There is no mention

Hi.

On the SPR website's fee‑structure page, the listed fees are “tuition / annual programme fees” — e.g. ₹ 2.50 lakh per year for B.Pharm, ₹ 1.00 lakh per year for D.Pharm, etc.

External sources summarizing SPR admissions say that the “tuition fee ranges between ₹ 12,000 to ₹ 5.8 lakhs” depending on

The eligibility page distinguishes between general and reserved category criteria, which strongly suggests that SPR

Hi.

There is no statement on the official SPR eligibility or admission‑process pages indicating that “students appearing for 12th (awaiting results)” or “predicted board examination scores” will be considered.

External education‑listing sources summarizing SPR's conditions also mirror the “passed 10+2

Hi.

for B.Pharm admissions, the “merit list” is not solely based on 12th‑class marks — it includes an entrance exam (or valid external score) + possibly PI (interview) + meeting eligibility criteria (e.g. 45% in required subjects in 12th).
