Admissions in US universities are done on the basis of several factors and not limited to your grades. They evaluate the whole package and not just one factor. Having good grades and a good GRE score helps in admission. You may have a tough time while dealing with top universities. However, there are Tier 2 and Tier 3 which would be feasible for you. If you plan to pursue your Ph.D, you must write to the particular department of the universities, submit your research proposal along with your mail. If they like what you wrote they will contact you. One of the most crucial part of a Ph.D applicant is to keep communicating with the universities. Do not expect a prompt reply.
Ph.D will lead to a research, academic and teaching career. You must hold a Master's degree, a few publications will be helpful and demonstration of research inclination is a must. Initially start researching on the universities itself if they offer research topics on your area of study/work.
