Vishwakarma Institute of Technology, Pune (previously known as VIT, Pune) is not a government college. But it is the very first private college in Maharashtra to get an Autonomy. The admissions are merit based. The closing ranks for almost all of the branches are pretty high near about the closing ranks of other renowned Government autonomous colleges. So, not being a government college doesn't make any difference to the genius crowd getting admitted to Vishwakarma Institute of Technology, Pune.
