Institutes like Indian Institute of Technology Bombay and other Indian Institutes of Technology only admit students into B.Tech (including aeronautical/aerospace) through the regular first-year route via Joint Entrance Examination Advanced, after qualifying Joint Entrance Examination Main. Diploma holders must follow the same process and start from first year—there is no direct 2nd-year entry.

No, you don't, to be honest. The curriculum will teach all the basics and required knowledge about the field. With all the project work, seminars, internships, etc., you'll gain the skills needed in the Automobile Engineering line.

Some abilities, however, are a plus if you have them beforehand.

  • Technical proficiency
  • Practical curiosity about machines
  • CAD software skills
  • Good mechanics and Physics

The difference is simple. Mechanical Engineering is a core Engineering branch with a career scope in multiple industries. Automobile Engineering is more of a niche branch that is focused on the Automobile industry.

Hence, the career scope and knowledge in Automobile Engineering are limited.

You'll get all the base components of research, design, manufacturing, and testing of mechanical systems, equipment, and machinery in Mechanical Engineering. Automobile Engineering gives the know-how of vehicle design, manufacturing, engine testing, upgradation, and overall maintenance and fuel management of vehicles, especially cars.
