You'll need to qualify through JEE Main and JEE Advanced and you can get admission for first year of four year degree course. [Many state or private colleges will admin Diploma holder in second year directly, but not the IITs or NITs.]
Diploma holders are eligible to get direct admission in second year of B.Tech through different CETs of state governments.
Repeating class 12th is not going to help you in getting admission into prestigious college.
And idea to take a drop looks good as long as you are ready to give your best shot, when you have that passion to get into IIT, dream to live the life and in environment of IIT.
But, I'll also suggest not to end up taking admission into normal college, because 4 years in college are going to decide your personality and attitude for coming 40 years. So try to get admission into nice college surrounding also affects a lot.
The best college to pursue B.Tech are-
1. IIIT
2. DTU
3. BITS
4. NSIT.

Engage Publication is for JEE Mains level and other equivalent examinations. Do not rely on either of the books for examinations like JEE Advance. For Advance level you can refer ML Khanna. Its question bank is very good. Refer IIT mathematics by Das Gupta. It is the most important book recommended by many teachers. If you want more questions and that too of good level then refer FIITJEE notes.
You can get ECE in only two IITs, one is IIT Bhubaneswar and second is IIT Dhanbad. You can opt to take other branch in top IIT and then, go for branch change but keep one thing in mind that every IIT don't provide branch change facility.
Old NITs, if you are going there for job purpose. And, if you just go for the degree, then I'll prefer you to opt for the new IITs, as there their name is far better than NITs.
