Civil Engineering

Believe it or not, significant proportion of engineering graduates go on to do something other than engineering. I think that one reason is because engineers love solving problems and putting things in order, and there are a lot of fields with big problems to be solved. Another reason is that all companies are faced with challenges that need to be analyzed and resolved - something that engineers are particularly good at. Here is a list of people - some that I have met in my own life, others who lead a public life - that studied engineering, but went on to careers where they don't solve engineering problems:
Michael Bloomberg, the ex-mayor of NYC, studied electrical engineering. He went on to build a company that organizes and disseminates financial data, then a media business, then became the mayor of New York. Beats process design two civil engineering students were kicking around a ball a few years ago, when they decided that no one had built a really good online beam calculator yet. They learnt to code and built it. Then they built a truss calculator. Then an entire structural analysis package in the cloud, and now they run a business called Sky Civ, and it might change the way engineers work. I once attended a talk about patent law by a notable lawyer in my city. Turned out that he had a degree in civil engineering. All of that math, physics, and code review was pretty useful for understanding complex intellectual property cases. Ashton Kutcher studied biochemical engineering, Mr. Bean was an electrical engineer, and Cindy Craw ford got a scholarship to study chemical engineering at Northwestern - though I am not suggesting you become a supermodel.
