Apart from GAT, NIFT also tests its candidates with a Creative Ability Test (CAT ) to test their creative skills, concept observation skills and illustrations based drawings and designs. This exam is conducted through offline pen and paper mode. Candidates will be given 180 minutes (3 hours) for this colour and drawing based examination.
A candidate not appearing in this examination, will not have access to situation test for B.Des or M.Des.

National Institute of Design - Design Aptitude Test, commonly referred as NID DAT is conducted nationally by the National Institute of Design. The exam comprises of two stages: Prelims and DAT main. The final selection list for admission to BDes and MDes courses is done by assessing weighatge of DAT Prelims and DAT Mains. The exam has moderate to challenging difficulty level. The main aim behind conducting this exam is to assess students design, creativity, observation skills etc. who want take admission in BDes and MDes courses. The difficulty level of the exam vary across different part of the exam.

On August 3, 2023, the conducting authority published the NID DAT Cut Off 2023 on its official website. The percentile of most recent applicants accepted into the B.Des/M.Des programmes at various NID campuses is the NID DAT 2023 cut off. The DAT cut off is usually given separately at each level of the NID 2023 selection process. The NID DAT 2023 deadline for the B.Des and M.Des programmes has been made public by the National Institute of Design. The cut-off for each participating institute's programme would be made available category-by-category. The NID cutoff is the minimal score applicants must meet to be taken into consideration

In order to be eligible for admission to design courses at NIFTs, applicants must fulfil the requirements of each programme, which vary depending on factors like age, subject combination, qualifying test, etc. Program-specific eligibility requirements might specify the minimum age, required academic standing, required number of attempts, and other requirements that a candidate must fulfil in order to be admitted. NID was founded in 1961 and was formerly known as the National Institute of Industrial Design.
