There is of course reason why any agency conducting examination gives ranking in different categories as well as overall ranking. For general category student, it makes no difference whatsoever because he doesn't belong to any category he belongs to general category. However, as you said in the example if you belong to SC category and the cutoff is set at 2400, then if your rank is better than this then only you will be allowed to apply else you cannot. Now, cutoffs are generally decided based on the total number of seats available in that particular category and a multiple thereof. Best wishes to you.

Tamil Nadu is one state where there are huge amount of seats in different engineering colleges which are not getting filled up following normal procedures. Hence I feel you have a bright chance of getting admission in your desired Institute via lateral mode, after you complete your diploma in Engineering from Maharashtra. Just have a look at the information brochure available on the website of the Anna University for knowing different aspects of this admission process and also a link through which you can actually apply for lateral mode admission.
Best wishes to you.

Only means by which you can get admission in an engineering college, almost anywhere in the country, without giving common entrance test is to seek Admission under the management quota. But remember this is available with only the private Engineering Colleges or Deemed to be universities but not in Government Engineering Colleges. Hence if you are seeking admission in private college then you definitely can get Admission under management quota without going through the CET. For this you will have to approach the management or the assigned person whose name and telephone number would invariably be given prominently on the

Hi, Changing a college after having taken admission is almost impossible to materialize. There are multiple reasons for this. The first is that college which you want to leave does not want to lose a paying student for the next so many years. Second: the college where you want to take admission may not be having vacancies to admit you. Third: If it's in a different University then the commonality of syllabus comes into picture. In your case, you are thinking of shifting from IIT to college under Pune University. My best advice to you would be to quit it and appear for MHT CET once again for the probable admission in a college in Pune.

Alliance University conducts it's own entrance exam for giving admission the first year of engineering students in the final year in class 12th or those who passed 12th standard. University also gives admission to the Diploma holders directly in second year of four year engineering course called lateral admission. Not only in Karnataka, but in the many states of the country almost 50% seats are remaining unfilled. It appears that there could be a similar case in the state of Karnataka since in spite of searching many websites I could not find mention of closing rank in any one of them for aeronautical engineering branch in
