Himachal Pradesh University (HPU) Shimla is generally considered a Tier 1 university. While, it's not an IIT or IIM (which are the typical examples of Tier 1 institutions), HPU is a well-reputed state university with decent rankings and is recognised for its strong academic records. The university is ranked 51-100 rank in the 'State Public University' category according to the NIRF ranking 2024. It is also recognised by the University Grants Commission (UGC). Additionally, HPU is accredited with NAAC with an A grade. 

HPU Shimla accepts several entrance exams for various courses. The university also conducts in-house exams. Interested students must appear for the exams followed by the interview round. Accepted entrance exams include:

Himachal Pradesh University (HPU) Shimla's BCA program is offered both within the main campus in Summer Hill and through affiliated colleges. The main campus, located about 5 km from Shimla city center, is known for its scenic setting amidst trees and natural beauty. The BCA program is a 3-year undergraduate course covering various computer science subjects and includes both theoretical and practical components.
