After fulfilling the eligibility requirements of the preferred course, international students are required to show their English Language Proficiency by qualifying for any of the English Language Proficiency tests such as IELTS, TOEFL or PTE. Though a 5.5 band in IELTS is a decent score, it might not be enough to get you into the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology. The Southern Alberta Institute of Technology accepts a minimum 6 band/score in IELTS, for admission to any of the courses that it offers.

Yes. If you score 7.0 or above in the IELTS examination, your score is considered a good score. Scoring 7.0 or above puts you in a safe zone where you clear cut-offs of most of the universities that require an IELTS score as proof of English-language proficiency. Getting a high score also helps you score well in the Canada Express Entry Pool, thereby increasing your chances of getting a PR. Hence, your aim must be to score as high as possible in any exam. Even though scoring high does not guarantee you a position in the top Universities, it improves your chances.
