IIT Kharagpur, IIT Hyderabad and IIT Guwahati are three similarly-ranked Engineering institutes in India that are closely ranked by the NIRF Ranking Institution. The eligibility criteria for admission in IITs, NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs are decided by the institute and not by NTA. JEE Main eligibility criteria decided by NTA are only meant for appearing in the examination. The details about eligibility criteria for admission to the institute are provided by Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA), the counselling authority which admits students to these institutes. For details about the eligibility criteria for admission, candidates can visit the JoSAA website. Candidates need to score at least 75% marks in class 12 to get admission in NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs. Candidates belonging to SC/ST need to have at least 60% marks. However, the criteria of marks in class 12 is lower in states like Uttar Pradesh (U.P.), Madhya pradesh (M.P.), Bihar, which accept JEE Main score for admission to BTech courses.

The eligibility requirements for IIT JAM (Joint Admission Test for M.Sc.) did not involve a minimum percentage or marks in Class 12 for the majority of participating institutes. The eligibility criteria for IIT JAM are largely concerned with the bachelor's degree and the minimum marks or CGPA necessary to secure in that degree.

Candidates for the IIT JAM must have a Bachelor's degree from a recognized university with a minimum of 55 per cent aggregate or 5.5 CGPA/CPI. Apart from it, candidates also need to submit a physical fitness certificate at the time of admissions. Candidates found unfit to pursue his/her science course can be denied admission by the admitting institute.
