Hello Jahnvi, As a general English word 'cutoff' means cutting off. Similar meaning is intended when we talk of 'JEE Mains cutoff'. Large number of students are desirous of getting Admission in IIT or NIT. A way out needs to be designed to select those students who have a reasonable chance of getting admission in either IIT's or NIT's or CFTI's. Hence a certain number of students only are allowed to appear for JEE Advanced or seek admission in NIT's, based on their marks or percentile in JEE Mains.
