JEE is well suited for CBSE students, so it's made tough. While in VIT even students from class 10th syllabus is made to appear, so the paper is made average.

Yes but not at NIT, IIIT and GFITs because they admit only through JEE Mains.
Other government institutes take admission based on your 12th grade marks. So, you can try to get admission at those colleges.

185 is a good score to get an NIT but the admission depends on your cut-off (based on caste). If you belong to OC (general), you may or may not get the top NITs.
But if you belong to SC/ST, you will easily get the top ones and I don't think your rank will be 12000. It will be more as 12 lakhs candidates have written and many can score above 250, your rank will go a little higher.

Anna University is the main conducting authority which organizes a state level entrance exam called as Tamil Nadu Engineering Admissions (TNEA). The application form will be available from the first week of May 2017.
