It depends. If you get call for counselings then definitely you have chance for NITs.

if you don't want to give another year for preparation of JEE Mains or any exam, then go for engineering, as far placements are concerned, don't worry about that.Give your best in engineering, if you check online, you will find that there are plenty of opportunities after engineering also.At last, never lose hope.

Depends on your category and the board you are from. Anyways considering open category you can get chemical ,civil,metallurgy in top 7 nits and reasonably better branches in the rest.ALL THE BEST!
