According to me, you may consider BJMC programme and give your next 3 years of graduation to learn music from your respected guru or established institute and then think whether you want to pursue music as a career or journalism.

The minimum educational eualification required to pursue a Bachelors degree/graduation in journalism is that you must have completed 12th class in any stream.
But, you should have English subject in 12th level. Without English subject, you can't do journalism course. You should have minimum 55% marks in 12th. There are various
universities in India which offers journalism course at graduation level. Some universities conduct its own entrance exam for the admission where as some universities give you admission on the basis of 12th marks.

There is no one single factor apparently. Besides meeting the general admission requirements like submission of TOEFL scores, essays, etc. you must demonstrate a high caliber profile.
