Instead of complicating and wasting time, you should prepare for GRE and do exceedingly well in your B.Tech to get a spot in the Masters degree programme in these universities.

I strongly advise that one should stay away from even the thoughts of doing any course via distance education that requires extensive practicals. You can think of doing any of the courses by distance that are available other than those requiring practicals.

If you want to make use of Diploma, then your choice of the branch is dependent on the ones which your state allows. Normally similar branch is allowed. Else, you have to appear for CET to seek admission in the 1st year of engineering in the branch you wish provided of course that you have completed 12th.

You can definitely pursue your dream of becoming an aeronautical engineer after your Diploma in mechanical engineering. You need to apply for lateral admission in 2nd year of engineering as per the procedure of your state.

Just look at this way. All the private colleges don't need GATE score. Only Government funded institutions required GATE score. Google it.
