If it NIT Trichy or any top 12 NITs you can go for it even if it is metallurgy as you will have a chance of getting a better branch like chemical through sliding. otherwise better go for local colleges CSE.

It depends on the board you are from ; anyways I feel you have a fair chance of getting into NIT'Ss if you don't bother about the branch. I mean you have a chance if you are okay with metallurgy and instrumentation kind of branches
