In my opinion, electronics and communication engineering is better because it has utility in wider range of sectors from IT industry to manufacturing plants. As technology is changing at a great pace, most of the innovations and technology changes are in digital world and communication networks.
On the flip side, petroleum engineering has a concentrated scope of work. Though, incentives and pay of work is more as compared to other fields. Even change of field is easier in EC as compared to PE.
