Clinical Psychologists can practice independently following RCI registration. They have the training and expertise to posit and treat mental health disorders with psychotherapy and other non-pharmacologic treatments.
Yet, Clinical Psychologists on a frequent basis, especially in hospitals, work with psychiatrists in collaborations where the Clinical Psychologist will provide psychotherapy and the psychiatrist will administer pharmacologic treatments, as appropriate. Psychiatrists are medical doctors who specialize in diagnosing and treating mental health disorders with a focus on medication management. They are essential for individuals with severe mental health conditions like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, or depression that may require pharmacological treatment.
On the other hand, psychologists focus on therapeutic approaches, including psychotherapy and behavioural interventions, to help people cope with emotional, mental, and behavioural issues.
For individuals seeking therapy and behavioural change without medication, a psychologist might be the better choice.

To become a psychiatrist, you need a bachelor's degree in science, followed by an MD degree from medical school. After medical school, complete a 3-4 year residency in psychiatry. Optional board certification can enhance your career. In India, an MBBS degree is essential, followed by an MD in Psychiatry. Online courses are insufficient; formal medical education and clinical training are crucial.
