The WBCS main exam is mix of objective and descriptive type papers. The Commission mentions in the official notification that all the compulsory papers will be objective type and the optional subjects are descriptive type papers.

The candidates need to select one optional subject from the given list of optional subjects and prepare according to the syllabus of each paper.

The WBCS prelims exam is qualifying in nature only. The marks secured in the WBCS prelims exam are not considered for the final merit list. The details of the WBCS prelims question paper is as follows.

Yes, there is negative marking in the WBCS preliminary and main exams. 

In the WBCS prelims exam, the quantum of negative marking is one by third. The negative marking makes the exam difficult. For each incorrect answer, the Commission will deduct 1/3 of the marks assigned for correct answer.

In the main exam, the quantum of the negative marking is 10% of the marks assigned to the question.

Yes, the WBCS main exam has some papers which are objective paper and other papers are subjective. The out of six compulsory papers, four are objective type multiple choice questions based paper. The other two papers and optional subjects are descriptive type conventional papers. The four objective type MCQs are  

  • Paper III: General Studies - I
  • Paper IV: General Studies - II
  • Paper V: The Constitution of India and Indian Economy including role and functions of the Reserve Bank of India.
  • Paper VI: Arithmetic and Test of Reasoning.

The candidates who appear in document verification will be sent for a medical examination at the Railway Hospitals. They will have to qualify in the medical category ‘B-1’ as prescribed in the Indian Railway Medical Manual. Those wearing glasses or having flat foot, knock knee, squint eyes, colour blindness and other bodily defects are not eligible for an appointment.

The process of RPF SI document verification is gi

  • Based on the performance of candidates in the CBT and subject to their qualifying in PET & PMT, candidates are called for document verification
  • In cases of two or more candidates securing the same marks, their merit position is determined by age criteria i.e. older person is given higher seniority
  • The appointment of selected candidates is subject to their passing requisite Medical Fitness Test to be conducted by the Railway Administration
  • The final verification of educational and category certificates, verification of character and antecedents of the candidates from the local administration

Adequate number of candidates are selected for RPF SI PET/PMT. Candidates 10 times the number of vacancies are selected for PET and PMT. It is mandatory to clear the PET and the same is qualifying in nature. Candidates need to qualify in all the tests to be considered.
